The OneBusAway five-year strategic plan includes the establishment of a non-profit foundation to oversee the project and the establishment of a sustainable funding stream to support full-time project staff. In June 2019 we took a significant step in this direction through the formal establishment of the Open Transit Software Foundation as a new home for the project.  We are currently in the process of applying for 501(c)(3) status with the IRS as a charitable organization.

In the meantime, we continue to have project-wide expenses for various items — in particular, Google is now charging OneBusAway for the geolocation service used by all trip plans (a total of about $1,000 per month!), and apparently will continue to do so until we have official 501(c)(3) status.  We don’t want to pull the plug on trip planning and are working on other solutions, but in the meantime please consider making a donation via the University of Washington.  All expenditures of donated funds are approved by the OneBusAway Board of Directors
